How we use cookies

We, and our partners, use the following cookies to deliver, measure and improve the Services, and to show you advertising that you might be interested in. You can access our list of partners and the purposes for which they use cookies via our cookie consent tool.

Strictly necessary cookies:

These cookies are strictly necessary to allow us to operate the Services and cannot be switched off in our systems. For example, these cookies are used to ensure the security of the Services, to prevent fraud and debug the site and are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. Without these cookies, services you have asked for cannot be provided. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will then not work.

Performance cookies:

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our Site and its ads. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the Site. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our Site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.

We may also obtain information from our email newsletters or other communications we send to you, including whether you opened or forwarded a newsletter or clicked on any of its content. This information tells us about our newsletters’ effectiveness and helps us ensure that we are delivering information that you find interesting.

We allow certain service providers to place third-party cookies and use similar technologies through your use of the Services for purposes of analyzing performance, including collecting information about your online activities over time and across different websites, applications and/or devices. For instance, to help us better understand how people engage with the Service, we work with third-party analytics partners such as Google Analytics. Google Analytics cookies are used to collect information about how users use our Services. This information is used to compile reports, which disclose Site trends without identifying individual visitors, and help us improve our Site. For more information on Google Analytics, click here. You can also learn more about Google’s practices by going to https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and opt-out of them by downloading the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, available at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Functional cookies:

These cookies enable the Site to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. For example, when you continue to use or return to the Site, we will recognize your username and remember your settings and content preferences. Deletion of these types of cookies will result in limited functionality of the Site and a less personalized experience.

Advertising and targeting cookies:

These cookies may be set through our Site by our advertising partners. They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests, show you basic or personalized adverts on other sites and to generate audience insights. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising.

We work with advertising networks and programmatic exchanges to allow us to serve you ads. These third-party ad-networks and exchange providers may use third-party cookies, pixels, or similar technologies to collect information, including your device and advertising identifiers or IP address for advertising. The information these third parties collect may be used to help us provide you with more relevant ads on or off the Services. We also work with website publishers, application developers, advertising networks, and service providers to deliver our own ads and other content promoting Wattpad on other websites and services. Cookies and similar technologies may be used to serve you with ads that may be relevant to you and your interests on other websites, applications and devices, and to regulate the ads you receive and measure their effectiveness.

Mobile Identifiers and Mobile Device Settings

The operating system on your mobile device may provide you with additional options to opt out of interest-based advertising or to otherwise reset your mobile identifiers. For example, you may use the "Limit Ad Tracking" setting (on iOS devices) or the "Opt out of Interest-Based Ads" setting (on Android) to limit the use of information about your use of apps for purposes of serving you ads targeted to your interests, to opt-out of location tracking when using our app or to disable mobile analytics and bug reporting.

Interest-Based Advertising

The Network Advertising Initiative’s (NAI) Opt-Out Tool allows you to opt out from the use of information about your online activities for interest-based advertising by NAI member companies.

Certain targeted ads that we (or a service provider) display to you based on information about your online activities across websites and other interactive properties operated by third parties may include the "Ad Choices" icon or another mechanism to opt out of receiving interest-based ads.

If you are located in Canada, please visit www.youradchoices.ca. If you are located in Europe, please visit www.youronlinechoices.com to learn how to opt out of having your data used for interest-based advertising by European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (EDAA) member companies.

"Do Not Track Signals"

Your browser settings may allow you to automatically transmit a "Do Not Track" signal. Because there currently is not an industry or legal standard for recognizing or honoring DNT signals, we are not configured to respond to them at this time. We await the result of work by the privacy community and industry to determine when such a response is appropriate and what form it should take.
